If you use an IM program like Trillian, or Adium or Pidgin, it's super easy to add an IRC server, and idle in the channel. 

Alternatively you could use mIRC, which is a lightweight IRC client.  I prefer to use the nexgen acidmax version, available for download here: http://www.scriptheaven.net/downloadview-details-214-Nexgen_Acidmax.html

No need to install the program, just unzip the folder to your harddrive and run mirc.exe

Would love to see some more people idling here...
